About Lisungi

We are a nonprofit organization founded by immigrants, for immigrants.

Our organization’s name, Lisungi, is from an African language called Lingala, one of the most spoken languages in the African community. The word, “lisungi,” literally means “assistance,” and we named our organization Lisungi because it reflects, in name, our desire to help our fellow immigrant community members.

At Lisungi Assistance Maine, we enhance the lives of the African community in Maine by facilitating their integration and supporting them in addressing their most pressing needs.

We exist to ensure that newcomers from African countries—especially those who arrived via South America—find the support they need to settle, survive, and thrive in Maine.

Our Mission and Vision

Our mission is to provide practical assistance and emotional support that eases the integration of African immigrant families into American society.

Our vision is to have a strong, supported, and united African community in Maine, empowered to succeed. We want the entire Central African community to recognize that this association exists for them.
